Water Quality Presentation

On September 10, 2026, 6:30pm at the Thorncreek Township Fire station TLPOA is hosting a Water Quality/Watershed presentation and discussion.  Dr. Christopher Winslow will be our presenter.  Can’t make it to the fire station?  Details about how to attend via Zoom or view a recording of the event will be forthcoming.

Dr. Chris Winslow is the director of both the Ohio Sea Grant Program and Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory, where he coordinates Lake Erie research, education, and outreach with state and federal agencies and university partners. He also serves as executive director of the Lake Erie and Aquatic Research Network (LEARN). LEARN was established with funding from the National Science Foundation to connect field stations, researchers, and agencies to address Lake Erie challenges. Since 2015, Ohio Sea Grant has managed the Ohio Department of Higher Education's HAB Research Initiative, which includes $24 million in funds for 115 projects to 15 Ohio-based universities. Chris received his master's degree and Ph.D from Bowling Green State University and bachelor's degree from Ohio University. Chris was just recently awarded the International Association of Greats Lakes Research's (IAGLR) 2025 Large Lakes Champion.

These are some of the volunteers who have been taking water samples and collecting data for water quality on Tri Lakes for 4 years.

Talk title: Lake assessments: what to measure, why it matters, should we be concerned, and actions to take.

Presentation description/Abstract: Presentation will highlight (1) physical properties of lakes (e.g., water movement, thermal stratification, light levels, and how heat and wind affect water bodies); (2) chemical properties of water (e.g., dissolved oxygen and nutrient); and (3) biological components of lakes (e.g., plankton, rooted plants, fish, and bacteria) including food web dynamics. Talk will end with an update on Tri-Lakes data and possible solutions to improve water and ecosystem condition.
